Constitute Price Regulatory Authority to control price rise, demands...

Thiruvananthapuram: Welfare Party of India Kerala unit demanded the state government to constitute a Price Regulatory Authority with sufficient powers to control the unbearable high prices of all essential commodities that have made the life miserable. The state chapter opened a symbolic fair price shop in front of the state secretariat. Inaugurating the fair price shop, Party vice-president Surendran Karippuzha asked the government to intervene strongly and effectively in the public market to check the price rise. All the tall claims by the central and state governments while introducing the neo-liberal economic policies have proved futile. The economic front faces unprecedented conflicts including devaluation of the Indian currency and the central and state rulers are immersed in corruption scandals. By his statement that the malnutrition deaths of tribes at Attappady has been due to their reluctance to take food is a kind of mockery of the Kerala people. The public distribution system in the state has been shattered and the people find it difficult to purchase their daily needs. This is being utilized by hoarders and black marketers to create artificial scarcity of commodities and increase the prices. He asked the government not to be a passive spectator, but an active interventionist and perform its constitutional and administrative responsibility. Hundreds of people purchased essential commodities at highly reasonable rates from the symbolic fair shop that lasted for about two hours. The programme was also attended by state secretary Sreeja Neyyatinkara, district president Rajagopalan Nair, district general secretary Ashraf Kallara, vice-presidents Madhu Kallara and Ayyub Khan, district secretary Kabeer Vallakkadavu
