PRESS STATEMENT *WPI Strongly Condemn the Raids and Arrest of Human Right Activist and Intellectuals* New Delhi, 29 AUGUST 2018 The Welfare Party of India strongly condemned the raids and arrests of the human rights activists and intellectuals throughout the country and called it an attempt to murder democracy. National President Dr SQR Ilyas in a statement criticized the BJP Government both at the Centre and Maharashtra State and said that they are behaving like a totalitarian and authoritarian regime with scant regard to the citizens rights. He further pointed out that these human rights activists and intellectuals have been working relentlessly for the protection of the rights of the marginalized sections of the society and have boldly raised their voice against the abuse of their rights by the state. Arresting them is an attempt by the government to stifle these voices of dissent. He said, the BJP government has failed miserably in delivering their promises and is diverting the public attention from their failures by targeting these innocent human rights activists and intellectuals and falsely implicating fabricated cases on them, for questioning the government's anti peoples and pro corporate policies. He said, with the elections fast approaching an environment of fear and terror is created by attacking the Muslims, Dalits, Farmers, Labourers, Tribals and the human rights activists by the fascist forces who enjoy state protection. He denounced the arrests of these human rights activists and intellectuals and said it is an attempt to undermine the democracy and the constitution of this country and is acting as a reminiscent of' the emergency'. He demanded withdrawal of all the cases against these activists and intellectuals and demanded their immediate release.
